Help Identify Medicare Part D Barriers for Patients with Alopecia Areata
- August 22, 2026
The Society of Dermatology Nurse Practitioners (SDNP) is proud to support an important new advocacy initiative from the National Alopecia Areata Foundation® (NAAF).
In 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) clarified that Medicare Part D plans should cover FDA-approved JAK inhibitors when prescribed for medically accepted indications, including severe alopecia areata. While many patients have successfully obtained coverage, others continue to face denials, delays, and other barriers to accessing treatment.
NAAF is working to better understand these challenges and is asking for your help.
If you have patients with Medicare Part D who have:
- Been denied coverage for an FDA-approved JAK inhibitor prescribed for severe alopecia areata,
- Experienced significant delays or barriers to obtaining coverage, or
- Needed to go through an appeals process before ultimately receiving approval, please encourage them to share their experience with NAAF.
